Guides

Written from real moves.

The 6-week planning timeline

What to do each week, in the order that actually helps.

  • Week 6 — Set the date, budget, and who's doing what. Get quotes now, not later.
  • Week 5 — Walk every room and decide keep / donate / sell / discard before you buy a single box.
  • Week 4 — Book movers, elevators, permits, and storage. Order supplies.

Packing fragile things properly

Glass, art, instruments, and the mistakes that break them.

  • Pack plates vertically on their edges, never stacked flat — flat plates crack under their own weight.
  • Wrap each glass individually and fill the hollow; empty space is what breaks things.
  • Use small boxes for heavy items and large boxes for light ones. Reverse that and the box fails.

Moving with kids and pets

Sequencing rooms so the household stays functional.

  • Pack children's rooms last and unpack them first; familiar things reduce the disruption fastest.
  • Keep one box of comfort items — a blanket, two toys, a nightlight — travelling in the car with you.
  • On move day, arrange care off-site for small children and pets. Open doors and busy crews don't mix.

Coordinating a move remotely

How to stay in control from another time zone.

  • Insist on a written inventory with photos — it's the only shared source of truth when you're not there.
  • Name one decision-maker on site. Two people improvising in your absence costs more than either would.
  • Agree the escalation rule up front: what gets a call, what gets a text, what just gets handled.

Downsizing a family home

A gentler method for deciding what stays.

  • Measure the new space first. The floor plan makes the decisions instead of you having to.
  • Start with the least emotional rooms — garage, laundry, linen closet — to build momentum.
  • Use four piles: keep, family, donate, discard. 'Undecided' becomes a fifth house otherwise.

Your first 48 hours in a new home

The short list that makes a house feel livable.

  • Make the beds first. Everything else is easier after a night of real sleep.
  • Set up one working bathroom: soap, towels, paper, curtain.
  • Get the kitchen to coffee-and-a-meal standard before you unpack anything decorative.
